Alex Hegenbarth, Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Tewkesbury Liberal Democrats, backs calls for NHS staff to receive military-style active duty bonuses while fighting COVID-19.

Alex said "The Liberal Democrats believe that our front-line workers deserve more than just a badge. NHS staff should get the same as the Armed Forces do when on the front-lines during this time of national crisis."

The bonus forms part of a "front line support package" being called for by the Liberal Democrats, which includes:

• Fast-track procurement for PPE to reduce the risk for carers.

• Practical help for frontline workers, such as securing accommodation for those who are self-isolating.

• NHS staff to get an extra £29 per-day service reward, similar to the deployment allowance paid to Armed Forces in the field.

The call comes amid growing criticism of the government over shortages of specialist safety kit, which critics say is putting the lives of doctors and nurses at risk.
