Lib Dem parliamentary candidates call on our local Tory MPs to stand up to Boris Johnson

September 10, 2019 8:26 PM

Alex HegenbarthThe Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidates for the Gloucestershire constituencies have made a joint statement against Boris Johnson's decision to suspend Parliament.

"This decision is an outrage to democracy and we are hugely concerned that the national interest is being put behind the narrow interests of the a Conservative party.

"Gloucestershire has benefitted enormously from Britain's membership of the European Union and local businesses have grown and prospered as a result of close economic and cultural ties with Europe. Thousands of jobs across the county rely on our ability to trade seamlessly with Europe and these jobs are under threat if Britain crashes out of the EU without a deal.

"We believe that the decision made by Boris Johnson to suspend Parliament in order to stop opposition to a No Deal Brexit is undemocratic and damaging to our county. We therefore call on all of Gloucestershire's MPs to stand up to Boris Johnson and to do everything they can to stop a damaging No Deal Brexit, including voting against the Government in a future vote of no confidence.

"The Liberal Democrats will always put the interests of our county and our country above our party. We oppose the economic risk presented by any form of Brexit - let alone the no deal Brexit being pursued by the Conservatives."
