Alistair Cameron, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Tewkesbury has called on health bosses to rethink plans to withdraw the out-of-hours GP service at Tewkesbury Hospital.

The change is due to be introduced on 1 April when the service will transfer from Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust to the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT)

Alistair said:

"Patients in Tewkesbury who want to see a GP outside normal hours are being told they will have to go to Cheltenham or another Primary Care Centre such as Gloucester or Moreton-in- Marsh. However, this is not acceptable or reasonable.

You cannot expect someone who is ill to travel that distance, particularly if they do not have access to a car. I therefore believe the health trust need to consider this matter again and take urgent action to ensure a GP out-of-hours service continues to be available at Tewkesbury Hospital.

I will be taking this matter up with the health trust. The out-of-hours GP service must be allowed to continue."
