Alistair Cameron, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Tewkesbury has expressed his disappointment at the decision by the Ministry of Defence to close the Ashchurch Army Depot site. Tewkesbury Liberal Democrats

Alistair said: "The first consideration must be over the future of the military and civilian staff who have been working at the site. It is important that the MOD provide every possible support to these staff for their future."

"Any future development of this area needs to be carefully planned for the long term interests of the local community and economy. There is already an application for a supermarket further down the A46 and plans have been drawn up for a garden and retail centre.

"It is very important that the planners do not consider each of these applications in isolation. Instead they need to consult with local residents and councillors to produce a master plan for the whole area.

Any development will need to take account of the significant traffic implications, any potential flood risk and preserving local shopping centres and communities. I would also like to see an improvement in public transport through more bus services and investment at Ashchurch for Tewkesbury Railway Station."
