Alistair Cameron, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Tewkesbury Constituency has written to Richard Benyon MP, Under-Secretary for Natural Environment and Fisheries urging the Government to renew the Statement of Principles with insurance companies on flood insurance as soon as possible.

Alistair said: "The current Statement is due to expire in July 2013. However, households renew their insurance on an annual basis and therefore a renewed Statement needs to be in place as soon as possible and well before July 2012."

Alistair added: "Many residents have informed me about difficulties they have experienced with getting flood insurance and that they have also seen big rises in their premiums."

One of the main components of the Statement is a commitment by the Government to implement a national programme of flood protection.

Alistair said: "I believe that one of the most important priorities for a Government is to safeguard its citizens from the risk of flooding through providing effective flood protection. It therefore needs to provide investment in flood defences and cleaning out our rivers, streams and drains."
