Alistair Cameron

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Tewkesbury

Alistair is 49 and has lived in Gloucestershire for over 25 years. He obtained a Degree in History from Bristol University and has spent most of his career working in Human Resources in the private and public sectors. He has also worked in the voluntary sector and as a civil servant.

Alistair has served as a Cheltenham Borough Councillor for Hesters Way including as Leader of the Council and a Gloucestershire County Councillor. He has also served as a governor at a local primary and secondary school.

Alistair was the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate in 2005 in Tewkesbury when the Liberal Democrats moved from third to second place.

He has supported campaigns to reduce the risk of flooding in our area and has called for Councils to be given powers to prevent building in high flood risk areas and householders in flood risk areas to get reasonable insurance.

Alistair has supported past campaigns against the closures of Tewkesbury and Winchcombe Hospitals (unfortunately Winchcombe has since been closed) and he opposes the current proposals to lose up to 200 beds at Gloucester Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals.

Alistair has opposed the proposals to build 50,000 dwellings in Gloucestershire under the Regional Spatial Strategy. He believes some new houses are needed, but wants to see them provided through regenerating our town and city centres and on sites previously built on (brown land) rather than on green fields. He is particularly opposed to building on the Green Belt and land which is at risk of flooding.

He has objected to the plans to keep open the hazardous waste site at Wingmoor Farm and the possibility of the County Council building a new domestic waste facility at either Ashchurch or Wingmoor Farm. He opposes building an incinerator anywhere in Gloucestershire and believes we should instead concentrate on producing less waste, reusing materials, composting, recycling and less harmful technologies than an incinerator.

Alistair has supported past campaigns to keep post offices open and to improve bus services such as through the introduction of low floor buses which elderly and disabled residents and parents with young children can use. He has campaigned for more train services at Ashchurch Train Station.
