New Year’s message for 2012 from Alistair Cameron

esident,
I would like to wish you and your family all the best for 2012.
We are now in the second year of the Coalition Government with the Conservatives. The main objective of the Coalition has been to provide stability during a difficult economic time and to tackle the country's deficit which is necessary to achieve long term growth and prosperity.
At the same time we have had a positive influence over Government through introducing measures which we value such as ending the detention of children of asylum seekers, taking nearly a million of the poorest workers out of paying tax altogether, giving children extra support to stop them falling behind in school and introducing the first meaningful rise in the state pension since Margaret Thatcher abolished the earnings link.
We have had our issues in government as has been seen over our recent disagreement with David Cameron over him exercising the veto in Brussels. I do not agree with every policy which comes out of the European Union. However, I have always supported our membership of the European Union which I see as a union of democratic countries working together for the benefit of all. We have many common interests with the rest of Europe which include trade, protecting our environment and working for peace. One example has been the positive role which the European Union including Britain was to play in reaching an agreement at the recent conference in Durban over tackling climate change. Failure to deal with climate change could have disastrous consequences for all of us and it was therefore important that we worked with our European partners to help secure an agreement.
As we start a new year I wish you every success and happiness for the future.
